Casualty Unit

Main

Only the most modern equipment is used to enable staff to effect treatment in the most efficient and timeous way. Discomfort to the patient is kept to a minimum.

The seriously injured are transported to the in-house X-Ray Unit on the trauma trollies and do not have to be transferred to  X-Ray beds.

Specialist are on call 24 hours a day. But patients use their own doctors. Patients not from the KOSH area will be allowed to use GPs on call.

Immediate access is available to the  X-Ray Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Theatres. These design features greatly enhance the abilty of staff to reduce times in transit between sections and more time can be utilised in treating the patient.

The Unit uses an emergency bell to summon staff from the other eight sections in cases of extreme trauma or large accidents involving a large number of people.

24 HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICES AVAILABLE

Diagnostic Radiography

Uses latest models of X-ray equipment, including digital radiology, to produce images of different parts of the body. This helps with diagnosis of different diseases and monitoring the progress with therapy or medication. The equipment is of high quality and produces images of diagnostic value and has minimal radiation dose.

Mammography

We use digital radiography to produce images of the breasts. This helps to make the diagnosis of diseases of the breast. This examination is also used for screening the population who is at higher risk of developing breast cancer or has a family history of breast cancer.

Ultrasound

We have the latest equipment and top range models for doing ultrasound examinations. These produce images of different parts of the body, especially the soft tissues, abdominal organs, joints and the circulatory system. This technique helps to make diagnoses without the use of radiation, as is the case with conventional X-ray equipment.

Screening

With screening techniques the procedure can be viewed on a monitor (TV screen). Any part of the body can be screened for diagnostic purposes. Special examinations using barium and other contrast mediums are used to assist in making the diagnoses.

A panorex X-ray machine is also available in the department to examine the upper and lower jaws, as well as the teeth ant TM joints. This assists dentists and dental surgeons to make the correct diagnoses and for the maxilla-facial surgeon to treat facial fractures and tumors.

Theatre Screening

Fluoroscopy is used during surgical procedures. The X-ray equipment is used to produce images of specific organs that are being operated on. It is also used in orthopaedic surgery for joint replacements, the setting of fractures, etc. The advantage of theatre screening is that the surgeon can monitor his work. We use modern equipment and techniques with minimal radiation dose.

Computerised Tomography

Here we produce three dimensional images of different parts of the body to help with the diagnosis of disease. These images are produced very fast and can be reproduced in three dimensions with re-constructions to facilitate the diagnosis of disease. The equipment also produces a minimal radiation dose during the examination.

MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging does not use X-rays to produce images and therefor there is no exposure to radiation. It makes use of a magnetic field. The X-ray department has a modern machine using the latest techniques. Its field strength is 1.5 Tesla. It has the ability to make exquisite pictures of the bran, spine, joints and soft tissues. It can also be used to evaluate certain abdominal structures. It has the ability to produce images in three planes, which helps with the accurate diagnosis of various obscure pathologies.

Theatres

Theatres

Wilmed Park boasts six effective designed theatres that meets with the latest requirements. These theatres are spacious and well ventilated. Away from the main hospital's traffic, but also comfortably near all units.

The safe and private treatment and caring of patients are emphasized. Attention is given to individual needs and support is given to the patient, and next of kin.

The pre-operative receiving room is spacious and with a peaceful atmosphere. Next-of-kin are given the opportunity to stay with their loved ones just before the operation and patients are constantly kept under surveillance from the nursing station that look out onto the patient.

Post-operative patients are allowed to awake calmly from anaesthetic under the direct supervision of highly qualified and experienced recovery room personnel with a doctor immediately available in the facility.

The theatres themselves consist of two conventional theatres and four big laminar flow theatres in which primary orthopaedic, arthroplastic and extensive surgical procedures are performed.

The theatres have the most modern equipment for the administering of anaesthesia, and  for the monitoring of the patient's level of anaestesia and conciousness during the operation, thus highly specialised operations can be performed. A new Endoscopic theatre was recently opened in Wilmed Park Private Hospital and is the only one of its kind in the North West.

Personnel in the theatre are trained in theatre techniqe and have years of theatre experience. Training of new recruits is constant.

Doctors are given the opportunity to, with the help of the most modern technology and equipment, do procedures with the support of dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgable personnel. An exceptional high standard of quality patient care is given constantly

The unit consists of:

  • 2 conventional Theatres
  • 4 Laminar Flow Theatres
